VIC Group
OSWA [VIC] Cancer Social Work Victoria
Cancer Social Work Victoria is a special interest group of the Australian Association of Social Workers. It was established in 1977.
The group has a strong and active executive with an elected treasurer and two co-conveners as well as representatives from number of metropolitan and regional hospitals including palliative care services. In 2007, an elected co-convenor structure for overlapping two year terms was introduced.
The purpose of the group is to provide information, education and support to our members in their professional functions as well as social action for people with a cancer diagnosis. Membership of both Cancer Social Work Victoria and OSWA are encouraged (please contact Cancer Social Work Victoria co-convenors for information about Cancer Social Work Victoria membership).
- Aim of the group:
- To provide to our members in their professional functions

- social action for people living with a cancer diagnosis.
We provide state based activities and support and work collaboratively with OSWA to provide our members with a national perspective and resource.
- Membership criteria:
Membership is open to all social workers residing in VIC employed or interested in cancer services and oncology social work practice. Social work students may join as associate members at a reduced cost. Non-social workers may attend professional development meetings at request.

- Description of group activities:
The group runs quarterly education sessions which are always well attended and provide the group with an opportunity to participate in professional development while simultaneously liaising with colleagues. After each meeting we may go onto dinner, where there is much stimulating and lively discussion.
We also have an active email list-serve through which information about professional development activities, articles and other matters of interest are circulated.
- Resources:
Through our list-serve, we distribute a range of information about professional development activities, funding opportunities, recently published articles, government policy statements and other matters of interest
- Location – Venue
We rotate venues annually, where meeting rooms and teleconferencing facilities are available, keeping metropolitan and rural public transport access in mind. Our meetings this year are planned for Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, St Andrews Place, East Melbourne.
